Youth Maker Monday: Innovative Solutions

Youth Maker Monday: Innovative Solutions

Please bring your own laptop if able.

Who can attend: Youth - Ages 8-15

Can you think of a problem you face every day or even just every week? Every problem needs a solution. In this 1.5 hour class, you'll get to work with CAD software and 3D production printers to create an actual solution to a problem. This Youth Maker Monday will provide the group with a platform to identify and analyze real-world problems and collaborate with their peers to conceptualize tangible solutions. The attendees will work in teams to find a solution that they can create in the Makerspace. This class will encourage the youth to think critically about problems they face in the real-world and take interest in developing an applicable solution.

What do you need to do?

Think of a problem you face on a daily basis,  and come up with ideas that you think you can fix using a product you can physically make. Come with ideas and be ready to brainstorm!

What will we do?

4:00 - Talk collectively as a group(s) and decide on a common problem(s) we want to fix.

4:15 - Draw up a mock design on the whiteboard and brainstorm solutions.

4:30 - Take the drawing to the PC and begin drawing up the solution in 3D CAD.

5:00 - Kick off a 3D Print of the final solution.

NOTE - Due to time constraints, you will likely not be able to leave with your print after the event.  We will print them for you, and you’ll be able to pick it up the following day.

Please bring a laptop if at all possible, to keep from having to share a computer with another attendee.

Prints will need to be designed to the size of 8.5" x 8.5" x 8.5" or smaller to fit our 3D printers.

Youth Maker Monday: CAD Creations

Youth Maker Monday: CAD Creations

Sign up for the Conductor’s first Youth Maker Monday of 2018 at UCA’s Makerspace!  Our first youth workshop of 2018 is here, and you won’t want to miss it!  You will be creating your own design using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software! CAD is a program that allows you to develop specifications and drawings to transform that initial idea into reality. CAD is used by skilled technicians to draft designs for nearly anything that is manufactured or constructed. Jason, our master maker, will be giving a detailed tutorial of CAD and will be able to provide hands-on instruction to help you use CAD to create your own design. Once you’ve created your design you will bring it to reality by laser cutting into wood using our state-of-the-art laser machine. You will have your own creation to customize and decorate, making it a one-of-a-kind work of art. We will have paint, wood stain, markers, and wood burners to help you decorate your creation.

Creation will need to be the size of 6”x6” or smaller so that everyone is able to laser cut their creation.

Examples of what you can create: Two-arm fidget spinner, three-arm fidget spinner, ornament, coaster, bookmarks, bag tag, cell phone stand, etc. The possibilities are endless.
